Has the government built record volumes of social housing?

On More or Less on Wednesday 20th September contested the claim by the housing minister, Rachel Maclean, that the government has built a record number of social rent homes in England. However, the number of new social rented homes has decreased. In 2021-2022 7,600 new social rent homes were built in 2010-11, 39,500 were built. Since 2010 about 160,000 social rent homes have been completed. In the period of the last Labour government (1997-2010) 360,00 were built.

The minister was referring to affordable housing, of which social housing is a subset. Under Labour 2/3 of affordable housing was social rent. Under the Conservatives it has been 1/4
