"Spending on affordable housing in England to be slashed in 2024"

This was the headline on a story in the Financial Times on 4th January.

Housing associations have cut their planned spending on affordable homes by 9%

"The number of homes English housing associations expect to build over the next five years has also dropped by 64,000 since 2022,"

The FT reports that in England, there are 1.2m households on waiting lists for council or social homes and that there was a net loss of 165,000 social homes in the 10 years to 2022, as sales and demolitions reduced the social housing stock. The FT reports that according to Shelter, there are 279,400 people in temporary accommodation and housing associations say that there has been a 63% cut in government funding for affordable homes since 2010.
